Adventure and Wellness Travel
Step beyond routine and reconnect with what matters
Guided journeys through Southern Africa, bringing together nature, movement and purposeful adventure.
Explore unfamiliar places, take an active part in the journey and discover what a different rhythm makes possible.
Make room for something beyond the familiar
Daily life asks much of our attention. Responsibilities accumulate, routines become established and there can be little space to consider how we are spending our time.
You may want to move more, spend time outdoors, share an experience with others or take on a challenge that matters to you.
A journey creates an opening: time to engage with different surroundings and notice what emerges when the familiar routine falls away.
A different rhythm begins with engagement
There is a particular satisfaction in finding your pace on a trail, learning a new skill or reaching camp after a day of shared effort.
The landscape asks you to pay attention. Terrain shapes your movement. Weather influences decisions. Travelling with others calls for patience, contribution and care.
Alongside rest and quiet, these experiences can offer a sense of involvement and perspective. We prepare the journey to give that engagement room to develop.
What becomes possible
Discover what the experience offers you
People arrive with different interests and expectations. A purposeful journey creates opportunities to explore several connected possibilities.
Confidence and practical judgement
Learn through action, make decisions and adjust when circumstances change. Discover where you are capable and where support helps.
A closer relationship with place
Spend enough time in a landscape to begin noticing its character, its demands and the care it requires.
Renewed attention
Notice your surroundings, your own pace and what the day requires. Give your attention to something immediate and tangible.
Connection through shared experience
Walk together, share tasks and make room for conversation. Get to know others through the ordinary responsibilities and unexpected moments of a journey.
Perspective to carry home
Consider what the experience reveals about how you spend your time, meet difficulty and relate to others, and what you would like to carry forward.
A more purposeful travel experience
How the pathway works
Prepare the journey. Leave room for discovery.
Understand your starting point
We begin with your interests, experience, fitness and reasons for travelling.
These inform the choice of route, activities, pace and support. A worthwhile challenge needs to make sense for the person undertaking it.
Take an active part
Your participation gives the journey meaning. Learning a skill, contributing to a shared task or making a considered decision creates opportunities to discover through experience.
The degree of responsibility grows from the programme and the capabilities of those taking part.
Travel with attentive guidance
Guides bring technical competence, preparation and knowledge of the environment.
They observe conditions and the group, make decisions where their expertise is required and create room for participants to exercise their own judgement appropriately.
Make sense of what happens
Reflection can be a conversation at the end of the day or a quiet moment on the trail.
What surprised you? What helped when something became difficult? What would you approach differently next time?
The value continues in how those observations influence what happens afterwards.

Language Adventure Travel
Practise English through shared travel, adventure and everyday conversation in Southern Africa.
The programme being developed brings qualified TEFL instructors together with adventure guides. Planned lessons connect with opportunities to use English throughout the journey.
Asking a question, discussing the day’s plans or sharing an experience gives communication an immediate purpose. Small-group participation creates opportunities to practise, listen and learn together.
Adventure Travel
Explore Southern Africa through a tailored combination of mountains, wildlife, coastlines, deserts, cultures and history.
Journeys can bring together walking, paddling, wildlife experiences and time to explore, with a pace that allows you to engage with the places you visit.
Possible starting points include:
KwaZulu-Natal: a journey connecting the Drakensberg, historical sites, wildlife reserves and the coast.
The Cape and Namibia: mountain and desert landscapes, with trekking and paddling where conditions and access allow.
Across South Africa: combine the Drakensberg and Zululand with Cape Town and the surrounding mountains and coast.
These are starting points for a conversation. The itinerary develops around your interests, available time and the conditions of travel.
Drakensberg Hikes
Spend time in the Drakensberg on a guided route matched to your experience and the kind of challenge you are seeking.
Options include shorter mountain journeys, mini-traverses and the demanding Drakensberg Grand Traverse.
Longer journeys call for preparation, sustained effort and the ability to adapt to mountain conditions. We discuss those demands with you and help identify an appropriate route.
Tailored Southern African Journeys
For international travellers, private groups and travel partners seeking local adventure expertise.
We help shape journeys around the people travelling: their interests, capabilities and what they want to experience in Southern Africa.
Planning brings together destinations, activities, guiding and logistical arrangements, with attention to how each part contributes to the whole journey.
What to expect
The journey begins before departure
An honest conversation about suitability
We discuss your experience, fitness and expectations alongside the demands of the proposed journey.
This helps establish an appropriate level of challenge and identify any preparation or support you may need.
Clear physical expectations
Before you commit, we explain the relevant demands: daily activity, terrain, pace, altitude and any equipment you will carry.
Different journeys require different preparation. We help you understand what yours involves.
Agreed practical arrangements
Your programme information sets out:
The itinerary and what is included.

We also discuss relevant health, dietary and individual support needs during planning.
Room to respond to conditions
Weather, access and the needs of the group may require changes.
Guides use their judgement to adapt the route, pace or activities, with care for the group and the purpose of the journey.
A balance of activity and rest
Time to recover, look around and enjoy where you are belongs within the programme.
The pace should allow you to participate with attention and make the most of the experience.
Reassurance
Preparation and judgement behind the journey
Chrysalis Project brings together experience in outdoor education, expedition leadership and risk management.
Founding director Nic Shaw has worked in environmental and adventure-based programmes, expeditions and fieldwork since 1992. His involvement in international standards development informs the organisation’s approach to responsible adventure.
Attention as circumstances change
Good preparation establishes how a journey will begin. Responsible guiding also requires ongoing observation and decisions that respond to actual conditions.
Guides consider the terrain, weather and the group’s capabilities throughout the experience.
Competence in practice
Qualified leadership, appropriate equipment, route planning and logistical support form the practical foundation of each programme.
Our approach is aligned with relevant international standards, applied with attention to the activities, environment and people involved.
Care for the places we enter
We travel through places that have their own ecological, cultural and everyday significance.
Respect for local communities, access arrangements and the natural environment is part of how the journey is planned and conducted.
